Some recent developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare this week:

Bipartisan Task Force on Artificial Intelligence

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, and Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries launched a bipartisan Task Force on Artificial Intelligence. This initiative aims to explore the potential of AI in various domains, including healthcare1.

  1. AI Adoption and Policies: A recent survey revealed that as many as 65% of US healthcare systems lack policies to govern AI use, despite the increasing prevalence of AI technologies. Policymakers and healthcare organizations are gradually becoming more sophisticated in their understanding and use of AI, adapting to the “new normal” in healthcare2.

  2. Meaningful Use of AI: Regulators are recognizing the opportunity to incentivize the use of AI and machine learning in healthcare. Clinicians are increasingly turning to AI-powered systems for data summarization and insights, aiming for a complete view of patient information to enhance safety and quality of care3.

  3. Explainable AI: Responsible and explainable AI is gaining prominence. Healthcare leaders are wary of “black box” systems and are seeking AI solutions that provide transparency and clear explanations for their decisions3.

  4. Tech-Enabled Payment Models: Expect greater adoption of tech-enabled, advanced payment models in healthcare. These models leverage AI and other technologies to improve payment processes and enhance overall efficiency3.

In summary, AI is becoming an integral part of healthcare with ongoing advancements and increasing adoption. As we move forward, responsible and transparent use of AI will be crucial for its successful integration into healthcare systems.

Margaret’s Note of the Week

Almost every human seeks respect and recognition from others. This ‘need’ ranks just below food and safety as critical for a person’s wellbeing according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

It isn’t hard to show someone respect. A nod to a stranger. Giving another driver the right-of-way. These types of activities, easy to practice and don’t cost a thing, are very meaningful to people.

We impact others mental health daily. My hope is that people start choosing to play a powerful if brief role in the lives of strangers. Have a great weekend!
