Meaningful Use of AI
In 2023, AI began integrating into mainstream workflows across various industries, including healthcare. With the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, analysts predicted significant shifts in labor dynamics, particularly for middle-class “knowledge workers.” In medicine, we witnessed numerous AI-enabled functionalities, such as ambient dictation, task management, and clinical decision support.
As electronic health records became prevalent, regulators responded with incentive programs to accelerate the transition from paper to digital records. The goal was to enhance interoperability, quality, and patient safety. Now, with every exam room equipped with computers or tablets containing patient information, clinicians increasingly turn to AI-powered systems for data summarization and insights.
Explainable AI (XAI)
In 2024, responsible and explainable AI is expected to take center stage. Healthcare leaders have become more sophisticated in their understanding of AI’s capabilities and limitations.
While AI has been creatively integrated into clinical and administrative workflows, there is wariness toward “black box” systems. Explainable AI aims to address this concern by providing transparency and interpretability. Organizations will prioritize AI models that can be understood and trusted by clinicians and stakeholders.
Tech-Enabled Payment Models
Another trend in 2024 is the greater adoption of tech-enabled, advanced payment models. As healthcare organizations embrace digital transformation, payment models are evolving.
These models leverage AI and technology to streamline billing, reimbursement, and financial processes. By adopting innovative payment approaches, healthcare systems can enhance efficiency and financial sustainability.
Remember that AI’s impact on healthcare continues to unfold, promising groundbreaking advancements that will revolutionize patient care and medical practices in the years to come. Stay informed and keep an eye out for further developments!

Margaret’s Musings
Societies are built for common cause. Culture, social identity, and the “rights” granted a person come later. First is the decision to collaborate. To share. To sacrifice for the good of all collaborators not just some.
I don’t see as much common cause today. I see people trying to make themselves stand out at the cost of another. That doesn’t feel or look like collaboration to me. It also doesn’t portend well for this American society.
Maybe put your politics down this weekend and strike up a conversation. Maybe spend time at a coffee shop and introduce yourself to a stranger.
Whether you like it or not, they are on your team.
