Margaret’s Musings

Politics is a study in binary thinking. Our choices are Democrat or Republican and framed all too often as a fight between good and evil. Congressional Candidates all too often think their job is to fight for their voters as well.

Call me old-fashioned, but I want candidates who are qualified to represent other people in Congress. People willing to work toward common causes and disagree without fighting. People who understand that differences of opinion are not hateful. If these qualities were job requirements, party affiliation would be less important.

This campaign season, I am going to prioritize Congressional candidates that have the acumen to represent others. Only after will I consider party affiliation. Candidates who think their job is to fight for me will not secure my support. Disagreements are healthy. Fights often lead to misery.

Why am I sharing this? We need to ask for more from our elected leaders. Fighting other representatives shouldn’t be a job qualification. If enough people start voting for well-qualified candidates, we might not have so many fights in the halls of Congress.

March Madness kicks off at noon today. Play well this weekend my friends.
