Recent Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare News
The past year has been pivotal, with significant advancements that promise to transform healthcare delivery in the years to come. As we move forward, here are three trends to keep in mind:
Meaningful Use of A.I.
In 2023, AI began integrating into mainstream workflows across various industries, including healthcare. With the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, analysts predicted paradigm shifts in labor, particularly for middle-class “knowledge workers.”
In medicine, we witnessed numerous AI-enabled functionalities, such as ambient dictation, task management, and clinical decision support.
Regulators responded to the transition from paper to digital health records by incentivizing the adoption of electronic health records (EHRs). The goal was to enhance interoperability, quality, and patient safety.
Today, clinicians increasingly turn to AI-powered systems for data summarization and insights, leveraging troves of patient information across platforms.
2. Explainable AI (XAI)
In 2024, responsible and explainable AI will take center stage.
Healthcare leaders have become more sophisticated in their understanding of AI’s capabilities and limitations.
While AI has shown promise in clinical and administrative workflows, there is wariness toward so-called “black box” systems.
Explainable AI aims to address this concern by providing transparency into AI decision-making processes. It allows clinicians and stakeholders to understand how AI arrives at its conclusions.
3. Tech-Enabling Healthcare Payment Models
The healthcare landscape is evolving, and advanced payment models are gaining traction.
Technology plays a crucial role in enabling these models, allowing for more efficient and value-based care.
Expect greater adoption of tech-enabled payment systems that align incentives with outcomes.
These models can improve patient outcomes, reduce costs, and enhance overall healthcare delivery1.
In summary, AI is becoming the “new normal” in healthcare, and its meaningful use, explainability, and integration with payment models will shape the future of healthcare delivery. Exciting times lie ahead!

Margaret’s Minute
Mr. Rogers Neighborhood was a mentor of mine growing up. A source of emotional, mental, and physical support I used to navigate daily life with a disability.
I quickly learned that people avoiding eye contact with me was going to be a regular occurrence. It is hard to explain the feeling of being alone when people are all around you, but I can tell you it doesn’t feel good. My mother would remind me often that it wasn’t my shortcomings but theirs at work. No matter how right she was, however, it didn’t help take the pain away. Just the anger.
One of the best lessons Mr. Rogers taught me was that my feelings “mattered.” That no one else in the whole wide world was just like me, and this makes me special. Just like you. More than anything I loved the absence of right or wrong in the word “matters.” The lack of judgment in the word “matters.” Only recognition. That’s what made it so special to me.
All too often I see complex things broken down into: right or wrong, good or evil, democrat or republican. I see arguments and fights where calm conversations are also an option. What I don’t see is room for “matters” in such conversations. Instead, sometimes these debates remind me of the way people would avoid my eyes. Almost like people who don’t want to see each other as fellow humans.
My hope is that we get back to “mattering” each other. There is enough division in the world as it is. Let’s be original instead.
Have a great weekend everyone - Spring is in the air.
