Introduction

Bias in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a pivotal concern in contemporary discourse, drawing attention from authors, lawmakers, and thought leaders. This discussion often centers on the adverse effects of bias, overshadowing the broader spectrum that includes positive, negative, and neutral biases. As AI increasingly permeates various aspects of life, the imperative to comprehend and mitigate biases within AI systems has never been more critical.

A design and operating framework for how AI can optimally distinguish and properly consider the nuances of bias from an unbiased perspective when working with humans is needed. One capable of considering context and demonstrating objective and transparent decision-making capabilities. A concept for how AI developers can help AI remain objective in a biased and subjective world. A framework that if successfully implemented might protect A.I. against human bias and serve as a source for humans to improve their own relationship with bias.

This report ventures into the nuanced world of bias within Artificial Intelligence (AI), integrating perspectives from epidemiology to recommend the means of establishing effective bias controls.

Reasoning: The Means of Regulating Bias in AI

Reasoning is a fundamental aspect of human cognition. It allows us to make sense of complex information, solve problems, and navigate the uncertainties of the world. A logical process of reasoning is most conducive to decision-making but sometimes emotions can prevent people from using logic to guide their choices. The ideal state of reasoning in humans occurs when emotions and logic collaborate during the decision-making process. This is known as wise mind.

We offer a review of human cognitive functions important for critical thinking in humans and provide correlatives to AI as a means of underscoring their relevance.

  • Problem-Solving: Reasoning enables individuals to navigate everyday challenges, from simple tasks like choosing what to wear based on the weather, to more complex decisions like career planning. It involves analyzing information, weighing options, and predicting outcomes to arrive at solutions.

  • Context: The ability an AI to use context when working with human biases is one means of ensuring these biases are not unintentionally adopted by the technology itself as part of its own decision-making process.

  • Learning and Adaptation: Through reasoning, humans can learn from their experiences and adapt their behaviors accordingly. It allows for the integration of new information into existing knowledge bases, fostering personal growth and understanding.

  • Communication: Effective reasoning enhances communication. By constructing and following logical arguments, individuals can convey their thoughts more clearly and persuade others, which is vital in personal relationships, education, and professional settings.

  • Innovation: The ability to reason is at the heart of creativity and innovation. It involves making connections between seemingly unrelated ideas, leading to new inventions and solutions to complex problems.

Goal: Protect A.I. from Human Bias

Humans and A.I. have similar reasoning processes. They learn from experience, apply reasoning to draw conclusions from experiences, and use conclusions to inform future choices.

Machine learning algorithms also use reasoning to interpret data, refine their models, and become more accurate in predictions and classifications. AI-powered autonomous vehicles, for example, use reasoning processes to make split-second decisions based on available data. This is crucial for ensuring the safety of passengers and other road users.

Expert systems like A.I. also rely on reasoning to simulate human expertise in specific domains. For example, AI-based expert systems can provide medical diagnosis or financial advice by analyzing data, identifying patterns, and offering recommendations.

The role that emotions play in human decision-making is so well understood that college classes are dedicated to helping students master their emotions when making decisions. A.I. does not generate its own emotions but can absorb them through human interaction. We believe this makes A.I. more capable of unbiased reasoning than humans. This divergence in reasoning approaches is where developers should focus their work. Of need is an operating system capable of identifying and working with human bias without adopting bias as part of its operating system.

Design Elements for Regulating A.I.

The following principles should guide the development and deployment of AI systems:

  • Fairness: AI systems should be designed to treat all individuals fairly and equally, regardless of disability, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or other characteristic.

  • Transparency: AI systems should be transparent about how they make decisions. Users should be able to understand the data and algorithms used by AI systems, and how these factors influence the decisions that are made.

  • Accountability: AI systems should be accountable for their decisions. Developers and operators of AI systems should be held responsible for any harms caused by their systems.

Further, natural language understanding is also a key area where reasoning is essential for AI. Reasoning is key to understanding and generating human language. AI systems use reasoning to grasp context, infer meaning, and respond appropriately in conversations, making them more effective in natural language processing tasks.

This approach to critical thinking within A.I. is a sound foundation upon which to design internal controls that help regulate how AI works with human bias.

Recommendations for Key Stakeholders

We feel the proper concept for bias controls in A.I. should include the following:

  • Operating Systems capable of recognizing and categorizing all instances of human bias.

  • Reasoning processes within the operating system capable of identifying the influence of human emotion in user prompts.

  • Learning processes able to account for lessons gleaned from working with humans differently and apart from lessons that lead to growth within the A.I. operating system itself. Consider this point as a visual:

  • Policymakers: Develop policies and regulations that promote the development and deployment of ethical AI systems. These policies should include provisions for data privacy, transparency, and accountability.

  • Developers: Design and build AI systems that are fair, transparent, and accountable. Use diverse datasets and algorithms, and test AI systems for bias.

  • Users Be aware of the potential biases of AI systems and take steps to mitigate these biases. Educate yourself about AI and how it works and choose to use AI systems that are developed and deployed ethically.

Societal Benefits of Effective A.I. Bias Controls

If developers can establish a process to keep A.I. unencumbered by emotional responses and human bias, we believe this technology can help improve how humans and American society work with their own bias. Recognizing and addressing the entirety of bias is therefore crucial for ensuring the technology works well for everyone. Ensuring AI does not perpetuate harmful prejudices but rather contributes to a more just and equal society is our goal.

We understand that this approach to reasoning and bias will take time to get right. We believe the time it takes is warranted given the national and social benefit.

Daniel Maley: An A.I. Bias ‘Use Case’

As an AI developer, I have firsthand experience with the challenges and successes of addressing bias in AI systems. In my work on a natural language processing project, I encountered a situation where the AI model exhibited gender bias in its responses. The model was trained on a large dataset of text, which included a disproportionate amount of male-authored content. As a result, the model was more likely to generate responses that reflected male perspectives and stereotypes.

To address this bias, I implemented a bias detection and correction mechanism within an AI model. The mechanism involved training the model on a more diverse dataset that included a wider range of authors and perspectives. Additionally, I incorporated a bias flagging system that alerted me to instances where the model's responses exhibited bias. This allowed me to manually review and correct these responses, ensuring that the AI model produced more balanced and unbiased outputs.

This experience taught me the importance of proactively addressing bias in AI development. By incorporating bias detection and correction mechanisms, we can mitigate the risk of AI systems perpetuating harmful biases and ensure that they operate in a fair and equitable manner.

Just as in humans, reasoning allows AI systems to learn from experiences and improve over time. Machine learning algorithms use reasoning to interpret data, refine their models, and become more accurate in predictions and classifications. This is why I believe that incorporating reasoning into AI systems can lead to more robust and ethical AI applications capable of making decisions that are both accurate and fair.

As AI systems become increasingly integrated into our lives, it is crucial that we ensure they operate in a fair, transparent, and accountable manner. Bias in AI can have far-reaching consequences, impacting individuals, communities, and society as a whole. It is our collective responsibility to address this issue and ensure that AI systems are developed and deployed ethically.
